BJP to Contest All 117 Punjab Assembly Seats Independently, Says Tarun Chugh
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing to contest all 117 Assembly seats in Punjab independently in the upcoming elections, according to senior party leader Tarun Chugh. Speaking on the party's strategy and outlook for the state, Chugh emphasized that the BJP has developed a strong appeal across both rural and urban areas of Punjab.
Chugh, a Rajya Sabha MP who was recently appointed as the in-charge of the BJP's central office in New Delhi and also serves as the party in-charge for Gujarat, ruled out a potential alliance with former partner Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). He stated that the party is fully prepared to contest the elections on its own strength, drawing parallels to unexpected political shifts in other states.
Criticism of AAP Government on Crime, Corruption, and Drugs
Chugh launched a sharp attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, claiming that Punjab has become defined by "three Cs"—crime, corruption, and "chitta" (drugs). He added a fourth concern, describing the state as being in the "clutches of extortion," where extortionists are allegedly running a parallel economy.
To highlight the gravity of the drug crisis, Chugh shared his recent visit to the home of Gulzar Singh, a Dalit man who died by suicide in Sangrur, the native district of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. According to Chugh, members of the extended family in that neighborhood revealed that three people had already died from drug abuse, while others, including Gulzar's son and a 21-year-old relative, remain addicted.
Regarding law and order, Chugh pointed to more than 22 grenade attacks across Punjab, including an incident at the BJP headquarters in Chandigarh. He also cited rising incidents of public firing, robbery, and murder, alongside deep-rooted corruption, noting that allegations have now been directed at the Chief Minister's wife.
Nasha Mukt Yatra to Launch on September 18
To address these issues publicly, the BJP is scheduled to launch a "Nasha Mukt Yatra" (Drug-Free March) starting September 18 from Pathankot district. The campaign will be led by national president Nitin Nabin and is designed to cover all Assembly constituencies in Punjab, allowing residents to share their experiences and grievances regarding drug abuse.
Chugh expressed confidence that the initiative would resonate politically, stating that the public is looking for change and financial recovery for the debt-stressed state. He compared the potential transformation of Punjab to the progress seen in states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh under BJP and NDA governance.
Independent Path and Alliance Stance
When asked about rumors of a reconciliation with the SAD, Chugh, who previously worked within the alliance for many years, reiterated that the BJP is focused on an independent path. He noted that the public feels betrayed by the AAP after its landslide victory in 2022, creating an opening for the BJP to form the next government.
Addressing his dual responsibilities in Gujarat and Punjab, Chugh, an Amritsar native, clarified that while he cannot officially serve as the in-charge of his home state, he will remain actively involved in coordinating efforts and supporting the party's campaign in Punjab.
