Finding the right ergonomic office chair can significantly impact daily comfort, focus, and long-term physical health. To help remote workers and professionals navigate the crowded market, the WIRED Reviews team has spent more than seven years testing and evaluating over 70 different office chairs. Led by gear editor Julian Chokkattu, who has personally tested more than 60 models, and reviewer Mathew Korfhage, the team has updated its recommendations for 2026 to highlight the best options across various price points and body types.

The Best Overall Office Chair: Branch Ergonomic Chair Pro

For most users, the Branch Ergonomic Chair Pro stands out as the top recommendation. Priced at $499, it strikes an ideal balance between ergonomic features, build quality, and affordability. The chair is highly adjustable, featuring armrests that move up, down, forward, backward, and angle inward or outward. Uniquely, the armrests can also adjust outward or inward to accommodate different body widths.

The Ergonomic Chair Pro also offers adjustable seat depth, a seat tilt function for active sitting, and adjustable lumbar support. It features a high-density foam cushion paired with a supportive mesh backrest. While the standard model is suitable for most, users over six feet tall can purchase a $29 Tall Cylinder add-on. The chair comes with a seven-year warranty and supports up to 275 pounds. The main drawback noted during testing was that the recline tension knob has a negligible effect.

Premium Seating Options: Steelcase Gesture and Herman Miller Embody

For those willing to make a larger financial investment, premium chairs offer superior comfort and durability. The Steelcase Gesture, priced at $1,510, is recognized as the best premium office chair. It features a highly adjustable seat depth controlled by a simple knob, fluid armrest movements, and an exceptional optional headrest. The Gesture utilizes an all-foam design, which feels plush but can run warm in hot environments. It is backed by a 12-year warranty and supports up to 400 pounds.

Another top-tier option is the Herman Miller Embody, retailing for $2,255. Known for its distinct rib-like back design and small footprint, the Embody provides excellent upright support that helps alleviate back pain. It features highly adjustable armrests, seat depth, and a Backfit adjustment to match the spine's natural curve. The chair arrives fully assembled with a 12-year warranty. Herman Miller also offers a "Gaming" version of the Embody, which features a copper-infused foam layer designed to wick away body heat.

Budget-Friendly Alternatives Under $400

For buyers on a tighter budget, the original Branch Ergonomic Chair remains a strong contender at $359 to $389. While it lacks the advanced 5D armrests and forward tilt of the Pro model, it still offers adjustable lumbar support, seat depth adjustment, and a comfortable double-woven nylon mesh backrest. Testers noted that the fabric can attract pet hair and may pill slightly over time.

For options under $200, the Staples Dexley Ergonomic Mesh Swivel Task Chair is highly recommended at its $169 retail price (frequently discounted to $150). The Dexley features an all-mesh seat for maximum airflow, an included headrest, and simple 15-minute assembly. However, the mesh can feel slightly rough on the skin, and the seat may sink over years of use. Staples also offers the basic Essentials Task Chair for $120, which features a fixed back and static armrests.

Iconic Adjustability: Herman Miller Aeron

The Herman Miller Aeron with PostureFit SL, priced at $2,095, remains an industry icon. Known for its durability and firm, supportive Pellicle mesh, the Aeron was updated recently with new dark olive Jasper and dark blue Nightfall color options. It offers highly specialized adjustments, making it a favorite for users seeking a highly customizable, breathable seating experience.
