Udhayanidhi Stalin Faces Backlash and FIR Over Controversial Remark Linked to Actor Trisha

A major political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu following a controversial remark by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and Leader of the Opposition, Udhayanidhi Stalin. The comment, made during a public protest, has been widely interpreted as a derogatory double entendre targeting actor Trisha. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from prominent public figures, including singer Chinmayi Sripaada and actor-politician Khushbu Sundar, and has led to police action against the DMK leader.

The controversy unfolded during a DMK-led protest in Thanjavur concerning the ongoing Cauvery water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. While Udhayanidhi was addressing the gathering and criticising Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay over his silence on the water issue, members of the crowd began chanting "Trisha, Trisha." In response to the slogans, Udhayanidhi made a remark that many viewed as a sexual innuendo, before smiling and claiming he was referring to the Cauvery river. The comment quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage.

Police Detention and FIR Against Udhayanidhi Stalin

Following the public outcry, the Tamil Nadu Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Udhayanidhi Stalin. The charges invoked against the Leader of the Opposition include insulting the modesty of a woman and provocation with intent to cause a riot. Amid the escalating controversy, Udhayanidhi was detained by the police in Thanjavur on Tuesday.

Speaking to India Today before his detention, Udhayanidhi defended his remarks and dismissed the allegations. "You decide, you heard the speech. Did I say something wrong? Did I take anybody's name except the Chief Minister?" he said. He also described his detention by the authorities as "vengeful."

Chinmayi Sripaada Criticises Dragging Women into Politics

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada strongly criticised the DMK leader on the social media platform X, arguing that women should not be used as pawns in political disputes. Chinmayi stated that she did not initially comprehend the underlying meaning of Udhayanidhi's statement until it was explained to her by an acquaintance.

"I didn’t understand what the purported underlying meaning of what the LoP of Tamil Nadu said. Someone known to me explained it a while ago. I thought it was about a water connection. Turns out most women didn’t get it. It was a Bro thing," Chinmayi wrote. She expressed disappointment that Udhayanidhi chose to escalate the situation rather than asking the crowd to behave appropriately, writing, "The least he could have done was tell his audience to pipe down or tell them to behave better, but he went ahead to say something far worse."

Chinmayi also drew comparisons to past political behavior in the state, referencing how former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was targeted by political opponents. She expressed disappointment that a younger leader had failed to set a better standard. "The older generation's profanity was normalised... but someone in the younger generation is expected to be better, not profanely worse. What a disappointment," she added.

Khushbu Sundar Demands Unconditional Apology

Actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Khushbu Sundar also condemned the remarks, describing them as "crass, cheap and deeply derogatory." She asserted that political differences should never be used as an excuse to compromise the dignity of women.

"Those who normalize such language should remember that once the dignity of women is made a political casualty, no family (including your own) is immune from the same treatment," Khushbu wrote on social media. She emphasized that public discourse must maintain boundaries regardless of political rivalries, adding that women should be respected rather than treated as pawns to satisfy political whims.

Khushbu concluded her statement by demanding that the Leader of the Opposition issue an unconditional public apology to Trisha. "The Leader of the Opposition owes Trisha an unconditional public apology for insulting her on a public platform. Let's see if he can own up to his actions and has the courage and decency to apologise," she said.
