Udhayanidhi Stalin Arrested Over Remarks on CM Vijay, Released on Station Bail After High Court Order
The arrest of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, on Tuesday has sparked a major political confrontation between the DMK and the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The arrest, which took place on the eve of the state Assembly's Budget Session, was triggered by alleged sexually coloured remarks made by Udhayanidhi regarding the relationship between Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and a Tamil actor. Following his arrest in Chennai, Udhayanidhi was transported to Thanjavur district, where he was questioned before being released on station bail in accordance with a Madras High Court order.
The controversy began during a farmers' protest in Thanjavur on Monday, where Udhayanidhi was speaking on the Cauvery water dispute. According to reports, while he was criticizing Chief Minister Vijay, an individual in the crowd shouted the name of a popular Tamil actor associated with the Chief Minister. Udhayanidhi responded with a comment that critics described as a sexually suggestive double entendre. This prompted a complaint from a functionary of the TVK women's wing, leading to the registration of multiple cases against him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, and the Information Technology Act. Police sources confirmed that six First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed across the state.
Arrest and High Court Intervention
On Tuesday morning, a joint police team from Thanjavur and Chennai's Neelankarai arrived at Udhayanidhi's residence on East Coast Road in Chennai. Security was tightened around the premises as television cameras gathered. At approximately 11:00 AM, officers escorted the Leader of the Opposition into a police vehicle. Before his departure, Udhayanidhi spoke to reporters, claiming that the TVK government was manufacturing a controversy to divert public attention from the ongoing Cauvery water dispute. He asserted that his speech had focused on farmers' welfare and that his remarks had been manipulated.
As police transported Udhayanidhi over 300 kilometers to Thanjavur, his legal team filed an urgent anticipatory bail petition before the Madras High Court. During the hearing, Advocate General P S Vijay Narayan informed Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan that the state did not intend to seek judicial custody and had only transported the Leader of the Opposition for interrogation. The High Court recorded this submission and directed the police to release Udhayanidhi on station bail immediately after questioning, while ordering him to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
Political Backlash and War of Words
The arrest triggered sharp reactions from political leaders across Tamil Nadu. DMK President and former Chief Minister M K Stalin strongly condemned the police action, questioning why his son had to be transported to Thanjavur for questioning instead of being interrogated in Chennai. Stalin described the High Court's intervention as a blow to the "fascist nature" of the TVK administration. He accused the government of attempting to prevent the Leader of the Opposition from attending the Assembly's Budget Session and alleged that the Chief Minister was attempting to deflect attention from his failure to secure Cauvery water or halt the Mekedatu dam project.
In response, the TVK defended the police action. Energy and Law Minister R Nirmalkumar stated that individuals holding constitutional offices bear a high responsibility to maintain dignity in public life. He declared that Udhayanidhi was unfit to serve as the Leader of the Opposition or remain in public life. Other political parties also weighed in on the dispute. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami criticized Udhayanidhi's remarks as unbecoming of his office but urged the government to withdraw the arrest, calling it politically motivated. MDMK General Secretary Vaiko criticized the comments, while the BJP described them as vulgar and demanded strict action.
Statewide Protests and Security Measures
The arrest led to widespread demonstrations across Tamil Nadu, with DMK cadres blocking roads and chanting slogans against the government in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Erode, and Ooty. Conversely, TVK members organized counter-protests to condemn Udhayanidhi's remarks, and the party's national spokesperson approached the National Commission for Women to demand action. Due to security concerns and large crowds of DMK supporters outside the Thanjavur East police station, authorities diverted Udhayanidhi to the Sengipatti police station, located 20 kilometers away.
Upon arriving at Sengipatti, Udhayanidhi initially refused to exit the police vehicle, questioning the change of location. Police officers assured him that the interrogation would be completed within an hour to allow him to catch his scheduled 10:00 PM flight from Tiruchirappalli to Chennai. Following his release, Udhayanidhi addressed reporters at the Tiruchirappalli airport, reiterating that his speech was focused on the Cauvery issue and denying any misogynistic intent. He characterized the police deployment of nearly 3,000 personnel as a "comedy" and stated that the DMK would contest the police action through legal channels.
