Shiv Sena (UBT) Shifts Strategy to Focus on Youth and People-Centric Issues
The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) is actively shifting its political strategy to carve out a new voter base by focusing on youth- and people-centric issues. Traditionally known for its religion-infused politics, the party is reorienting its approach after losing six Members of Parliament to Eknath Shinde’s rival faction. As part of this transition, the party has extended its support to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests in Delhi and is organizing similar demonstrations in Mumbai.
The strategic shift is visible across the party leadership. Party president Uddhav Thackeray has traveled to Delhi to meet with protesters at Jantar Mantar and engage with Opposition leaders. Meanwhile, his son and Maharashtra state legislator, Aaditya Thackeray, is leading efforts to mobilize and organize youth-focused protests in Mumbai.
Uddhav Thackeray Backs Delhi Protests
Uddhav Thackeray was among the first political figures to offer support to the CJP’s Abhijit Dipke and activist Sonam Wangchuk. On a recent Monday evening, the senior Thackeray visited the Jantar Mantar protest site in Delhi to formally declare his solidarity. He noted that Wangchuk had previously visited his Mumbai residence, Matoshree, and stated that he has supported the CJP and the youth from the beginning.
Speaking to the media in Delhi, Uddhav Thackeray criticized the Central government's handling of the demonstrations, describing its actions as undemocratic. He compared the administration's actions to "Ravan Raj," alleging that the government is mistreating women and young girls. He asserted that the public is becoming increasingly aware and that the government must listen to the country's youth.
Aaditya Thackeray Mobilizes Youth in Mumbai
In Mumbai, Aaditya Thackeray has taken charge of local mobilizations, organizing a well-attended protest at Shivaji Park. He has used social media to appeal to young people to gather peacefully, urging them to unite under the national flag. The party has also launched an English-language social media campaign titled "One Nation One Emotion."
Following a recent Sunday protest at Shivaji Park, several demonstrators were detained, and police registered First Information Reports (FIRs) and issued notices against them. In response, Aaditya Thackeray and his team have visited local police stations to assist those affected. He has set up a dedicated email address for protesters facing legal issues and appealed to lawyers to represent the students and activists on a pro-bono basis.
Aaditya Thackeray also criticized the detention of Opposition leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other MPs, during protests in Delhi. He warned that if such actions could be taken against prominent lawmakers, ordinary citizens and students could face similar treatment.
Broadening the Policy Agenda
Beyond youth protests, the Shiv Sena (UBT) is raising a variety of civic and policy issues. The party recently organized a Ram Raksha reading programme in Mumbai and Nagpur to draw attention to alleged financial irregularities regarding donations for the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Additionally, the party has challenged the central government's fuel policies. Aaditya Thackeray wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi concerning the E20 fuel mandate, which requires a 20 percent ethanol blend in petrol. He urged the government to make the blend optional, arguing that consumers should have a choice between pure petrol and the ethanol mixture.
In Mumbai, the younger Thackeray has also opposed state government plans to convert local football grounds into a convention center. He has publicly called on local athletes and footballers to oppose the development and protect the sports facility.
Rebuilding the Party Structure
Political observer Hemant Desai noted that the split within the Shiv Sena has forced the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction to restructure and rebuild. According to Desai, with no immediate elections on the horizon, the leadership is focusing on long-term party building by targeting issues that resonate with younger voters, such as employment, technology, and education.
Desai observed that the party's shift toward broader economic and youth-centric concerns represents a calculated change in strategy. He suggested that if the party sustains this focus on people-centric issues, it may successfully build a new foundation of public support.
