NIA Investigates Potential Plot Targeting Kerala Kumbh Mela After Massive Explosives Seizure

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is investigating whether a massive consignment of explosives seized in Malappuram in February 2026 was intended to target the Mahamaghamahotsavam, also known as Kerala’s Kumbh Mela, at Thirunavaya. Reports suggest that the planned target may have been chosen to trigger a grave communal riot in the region.

The development follows the NIA's arrest of Haris T.A., who has been described as a key conspirator in the case. Haris was allegedly involved in the illegal procurement of the seized explosives. His interrogation is reportedly providing investigators with vital leads into the larger conspiracy. With his arrest, the total number of individuals apprehended in connection with the case has risen to ten.

Details of the Explosives Seizure

The case originated on February 7, 2026, when the Kerala Police intercepted a lorry bearing registration number KL 10 BF 8395 on the Chemmad-Thalappara Road in Malappuram. The vehicle was parked in the compound of the Farha Hollow Bricks Company.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers recovered 89,600 explosive sticks and 10,500 shock tubes (NONEL). Three individuals found in connection with the consignment were arrested at the scene. According to authorities, the accused did not possess valid licences or permissions to transport or possess the explosives.

Following the initial recovery, the NIA re-registered the case and assumed control of the investigation. The agency has since conducted searches at 19 locations across Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, recovering incriminating material and identifying additional individuals involved in the conspiracy. On August 7, a day before the arrest of Haris, the NIA arrested three other accused individuals from Vijayapura in Karnataka.

Investigation Into Fake Companies and Financing

According to reports, the ongoing investigation has revealed that the explosives were transported into Kerala using documents allegedly organised under the names of fake companies. The NIA is currently working to establish the precise intention behind bringing such a large quantity of explosives into the state, alongside tracing the financial sources that funded their procurement and movement.

The timing of the seizure has drawn significant attention, as it coincided with the Mahamaghamahotsavam at Thirunavaya. The festival was celebrated throughout January and February 2026, lasting for more than 30 days. One active line of inquiry is whether the explosives were meant to execute a large-scale blast during the festival to incite communal violence.

While the investigation continues, the NIA has not yet publicly established a specific intended target or a definitive motive behind the explosives consignment.

The Significance of Mahamaghamahotsavam

The Mahamaghamahotsavam at Thirunavaya revived the ancient Mamankam tradition on the banks of the Bharathapuzha River after a gap of nearly 270 years. Referred to as "Kerala's Kumbh Mela," the spiritual and cultural gathering attracted an estimated 50 lakh pilgrims, far exceeding initial participation estimates.

The month-long festival featured several key events and traditional practices, including:

• Nila Aarti: A daily evening ritual performed by priests from Varanasi, bringing the traditional river worship of Kashi to the Bharathapuzha.
• Amrita Snanam: A sacred holy bath undertaken by sadhus, ascetics, and thousands of devotees on the final auspicious day.
• Vedic Rituals and Yajnas: Daily morning homams, Upanishadic discourses, and ancestral rites (Pitru Yajna) conducted under monastic guidance.
• Juna Akhada Leadership: The festival was led by senior monastic figures, including Mahamandaleshwar Swami Anandavanam Bharati of the Sri Juna Akhada.
• Inclusive Local Worship: The event showcased rare traditional rituals of local and marginalised communities, such as the Muthanum Muthikkum pooja and tribal deity worship.
• Mass Annadanam: Large-scale food offerings organised daily to feed tens of thousands of visiting pilgrims.

The NIA is continuing its probe to uncover the full scope of the conspiracy, focusing on the illegal procurement channels, the financial networks involved, and the ultimate purpose of the transport.
