Services pace bowler Jayant Goyat achieved his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket on Day 3 of the ongoing Ranji Trophy fixture against Delhi at the Air Force Complex Ground in Palam, New Delhi. Operating on a surface that offered little assistance to fast bowlers, the 21-year-old provided crucial early breakthroughs in his 12th first-class match to aid his team's fightback.

Standing six feet four inches tall, the Bhiwani-born cricketer reflected on the mental fortitude required to compete at the domestic level and pursue higher ambitions. Speaking on the challenges of bowling at the Palam ground, where conditions frequently favour spin or remain flat, Goyat emphasized that extra effort was necessary to extract results from the surface.

Disciplined Bowling on a Flat Surface

Goyat explained that the pitch demanded consistency and physical effort due to its slow and flat nature. His performance fulfilled team directives established prior to the innings, where the coaching staff advised pacers to focus on hitting disciplined areas rather than aggressively searching for wickets.

Services head coach AP Singh, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army, praised the young fast bowler's execution and tactical discipline during the match. Singh noted that enthusiasm in young bowlers can often lead to over-pitching or leaking runs when searching for wickets, but highlighted that Goyat successfully adhered to the plan discussed in the team meeting.

Singh described Goyat as an exciting prospect currently being groomed for higher levels of the game. The coach highlighted Goyat's positive mindset, noting that the youngster maintains a high level of morale within the squad and does not easily get discouraged by on-field challenges.

Family Legacy and Journey to Services

Goyat's entry into cricket was strongly influenced by his father, Dr. Wazir Singh Goyat, who currently serves as a professor of physical education at Maharaja Neempal Singh Government College in Bhiwani. Dr. Wazir was himself a fast bowler and was part of the Haryana Ranji Trophy squad during Kapil Dev's final season in domestic cricket, though he did not make an official appearance on the field.

Despite not making his domestic debut, the senior Goyat actively supported his son's cricketing aspirations. Goyat recalled that his father provided crucial moral support during difficult periods in his junior career, particularly when he struggled for form while playing age-group cricket for Haryana.

Before joining Services, Goyat represented Haryana across various age-group levels. He later broke into the India Under-19 team last season and was named as a standby player for the 2024 Under-19 World Cup. Seeking further opportunities, Goyat attended trials for Services after learning about the setup from local players, eventually earning selection.

Goyat entered the Air Force under the Agniveer scheme. During the match, news was shared with him regarding the Union Cabinet's approval of an additional two-year engagement period for 75 percent of Agniveers.

Technical Development and Future Ambitions

Regarding his bowling style, Goyat relies on a natural back-of-a-length delivery and aims to hit the deck hard. Having recorded speeds between 134 kmph and 135 kmph during his Under-19 stint, he is currently working with the Services strength and conditioning staff to increase his pace by building lower-body strength.

In addition to his seam bowling, Goyat views himself as a batting all-rounder who has previously batted in the top order. He cited former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis as his cricketing role model as he continues to work on both facets of his game.
