India Out of Hockey World Cup Semifinal Race After 1-3 Loss to Netherlands
The Indian men's hockey team has been eliminated from the FIH World Cup semifinal race following a 1-3 defeat against reigning Olympic champions Netherlands in their second-round match on Saturday. India required a victory to keep their hopes of reaching the last four alive, but a challenging final quarter saw the Dutch team score twice in the last 10 minutes to secure the win.
Harmanpreet Singh scored the lone goal for India in the 52nd minute through a penalty corner. The Netherlands secured their victory with field goals from Duco Telgenkamp in the 41st minute, Tjep Hoedemakers in the 51st minute, and Thijs van Dam in the 55th minute.
With this defeat, India remains without a point in the second round, having previously lost to England in their opening second-round match. Even a victory in their final second-round game against Argentina on Monday will only bring India to three points, which is insufficient to qualify for the semifinals. Consequently, India will transition to the fifth-to-eighth place classification matches after the Argentina fixture.
Scoreless First Half and Defensive Resilience
The match began with India showing controlled play during the opening half, successfully preventing the Netherlands from establishing long periods of possession. The Indian defensive line performed cohesively, limiting the Dutch attackers from creating clear scoring opportunities.
India made an early offensive move in the third minute, entering the Dutch circle from the right flank, but the Netherlands' defense quickly intervened to halt the play. Five minutes later, Rajinder Singh received a pass from Hardik Singh and drove the ball into the circle, but the Indian attack was once again stopped by the Dutch defenders.
The Netherlands had their first significant opportunity in the 11th minute when Thijs van Dam attempted a reverse hit off a pass from the left side. However, the ball struck the back of his stick, ending the chance.
Penalty Corner Defenses Hold Firm
The Netherlands earned the first penalty corner of the match in the 13th minute. Jip Janssen took the drag-flick, but India's Manpreet Singh executed a quick rushing block to deny the attempt. Netherlands Break the Deadlock
India earned their first penalty corner of the match in the 35th minute following a successful video referral. Harmanpreet Singh's initial drag-flick struck the foot of the first defender from the Netherlands. India reviewed the play and was awarded another penalty corner, but Harmanpreet's subsequent attempt went wide of the goal.
The Netherlands broke the scoreless tie in the 41st minute. Tijman Reyanga received the ball inside the circle and took a shot, which deflected off Duco Telgenkamp's stick and went past Indian goalkeeper Mohit into the net. India responded by earning a penalty corner shortly after, but the Dutch goalkeeper saved Harmanpreet's drag-flick.
Late Goals Seal India's Fate
In the 47th minute, Abhishek earned another penalty corner for India. With Harmanpreet off the field, Amit Rohidas took the shot, but his slap shot went wide after a deflection. India reviewed the play, claiming the ball hit a defender's foot, and were awarded another penalty corner. Sanjay took the shot, but goalkeeper Meijer Derk made another save.
The Netherlands doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Tjep Hoedemakers scored a field goal. India responded quickly in the 52nd minute when Rajinder Singh won a penalty corner on a counter-attack. Harmanpreet Singh converted the opportunity with a powerful drag-flick to bring the score to 1-2.
However, the Dutch team restored their two-goal lead in the 55th minute. Manpreet Singh lost possession of the ball, allowing Thijs van Dam to take control and score, sealing the 3-1 victory for the Netherlands. The result means India is still searching for its first World Cup victory over the Netherlands, who previously defeated India in a penalty shootout during the 1973 World Cup final.
