Elan and Saanve Megghana Discuss Flipping Gender Roles in Netflix Rom-Com 'Pyaar Prema Kalyanam'

The Tamil film industry is experiencing a notable resurgence of romance dramas and romantic comedies. Following the recent attention surrounding titles such as Idhayam Murali, Vishwanath & Sons, Once More, and Hi, the upcoming Netflix film Pyaar Prema Kalyanam is scheduled to premiere on August 21, 2026. The project marks a significant milestone for its lead actors, Elan and Saanve Megghana, who recently shared insights into the film's themes and development.

Elan, who directed and starred as the male lead in the film, expressed optimism about the current wave of romantic comedies. He noted that the release of multiple rom-coms featuring young actors is a positive development, as these projects offer stories that the youth can easily relate to. Saanve Megghana, who plays the female lead opposite Elan, shared a similar sentiment, expressing her appreciation for the genre and noting the successful performance of recent rom-coms like With Love.

A Shift in Creative Direction

The title Pyaar Prema Kalyanam serves as a play on Elan’s directorial debut, the 2018 film Pyaar Prema Kaadhal, which starred Harish Kalyan. Reflecting on his debut, which he directed in his early 20s, Elan acknowledged that the wild nature of the project suited his age at the time. He recalled writing and shooting intimate scenes without focusing heavily on political correctness.

However, Elan explained that his approach to filmmaking has evolved. For Pyaar Prema Kalyanam, he chose to move away from such scenes, aiming instead to create a film that families can watch together. This transition aligns with his growth as a filmmaker and his desire to appeal to a broader audience.

Exploring the Female Gaze and Gender Roles

The screenplay for Pyaar Prema Kalyanam was written by Nivedita Pohankar, a writer and short filmmaker. Nivedita is the sister of Aaditi Pohankar, who previously starred in Elan’s film Star. The concept originated during a casual dinner conversation when Nivedita shared a premise about a woman who runs away after marriage because she questions why she must move into her husband's home, suggesting instead that he live at her place. Recognizing the potential of the idea, Elan encouraged her to develop it into a feature-length script.

Saanve Megghana highlighted the importance of having a female writer shape the narrative, stating that Nivedita brought authenticity and a genuine portrayal of female vulnerability to the script. Elan agreed, noting that the female gaze introduced unique, subtle ideas that a male writer might not naturally conceive.

In the film, Saanve portrays Pavithra, a newlywed woman who openly questions the societal expectation that women must relocate to their in-laws' homes. Saanve observed that while many women are conditioned to suppress their emotions, her character speaks up consistently and questions traditional norms with pure intentions. To prepare for the role, Saanve drew inspiration from Michael Shurtleff's book Audition, focusing on finding personal elements to connect with her character's internal conflicts and family dynamics.

Elan's Transition to Acting

For Elan, starring in Pyaar Prema Kalyanam fulfills a long-held desire to work in front of the camera, a goal tied to his father's dream of becoming a hero. While he maintains that filmmaking remains his primary passion, he viewed this acting opportunity as a step forward in his career. He explained that his philosophy has shifted from taking extensive time between projects to maintaining a continuous workflow to learn new lessons.

Initially, Elan approached several other actors to play the lead role, but they declined, viewing the part as too small. This challenge, combined with his existing desire to act, prompted him to take on the role himself. Despite initial doubts, he received encouragement from his father and industry mentors, including acclaimed composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, who composed the music for the film, marking his third consecutive collaboration with Elan.

Pyaar Prema Kalyanam utilizes humor to explore and subvert traditional gender roles. Regarding the resolution of the film's central conflict, Elan revealed that he and Nivedita considered multiple options before deciding on the final outcome. He emphasized that the film does not aim to dictate solutions to the audience, but rather to initiate a conversation, leaving viewers to find their own answers to the questions raised.
