Ed Sheeran Set to Return to Stage Amid Palestinian Controversy
Pop star Ed Sheeran has announced that he will return to the stage after a wave of criticism over his handling of a pro-Palestinian comment by his opening act, rapper Macklemore.
Sheeran, 35, made the announcement on Saturday (September 19, 2026) at his concert in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.
He stated that the situation in Gaza is 'catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate,' and expressed his regret over the decision to remove Macklemore from the tour.
Protests and Boycott Calls
Pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside Lincoln Financial Field, where Sheeran was set to perform, waving Palestinian flags and chanting 'Free, free Palestine.'
Some fans who attended the concert expressed hesitation due to the controversy, while others, like Brandon Ateke, decided not to attend and instead joined the protest.
Ateke, an 18-year-old Brown University student, accused Sheeran of 'complicity' with billionaire businessman Robert Kraft and others in silencing Macklemore.
Sheeran has maintained his apolitical stance, stating that he has personal views on the conflict but chooses not to speak publicly.
Supporting Acts Withdraw
Four supporting acts, including Sheeran's backing band and performer Finneas, have withdrawn from the tour in support of Palestinians.
Finneas rose to fame collaborating with his pop superstar sister Billie Eilish.
The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) has extended its call for boycotting Sheeran's entire world tour, including upcoming Latin American dates and the as-yet-unannounced European leg.
No new opening acts or backing bands have been announced, and it is unclear how Sheeran plans to carry out his show.
Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has gained attention in the entertainment industry, with several artists speaking out against the conflict in Gaza and West Bank settler violence.
Since Israel invaded Gaza in October 2023, the toll on Palestinians has emerged as a rallying cry in the industry.
