The Indian cricket team is navigating a major transition in Test cricket under head coach Gautam Gambhir, while maintaining stability in One Day International (ODI) cricket. The presence of senior players, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer, has kept the core intact for captain Shubman Gill as the team prepares for the 2027 World Cup during its ongoing ODI series against New Zealand.

In an interview with The Times of India, former New Zealand bowler Kyle Mills discussed head coach Gambhir, the intense public examination faced by the team, the evolution of New Zealand cricket, and the factors driving New Zealand's recent success.

Assessment of Gautam Gambhir and Team Scrutiny

Sharing his thoughts on Gambhir's leadership and character, Mills noted that the head coach was always a tough competitor on the field who consistently meant business. He pointed out that after retiring as a player, Gambhir entered politics and emerged as a leader, describing him as a great tactician, a professional across all aspects of the game, and a tough taskmaster.

Mills also highlighted the unique environment surrounding Indian cricket, stating that he could not think of another sporting team across global sports that faces as much scrutiny. While noting that teams like Manchester United, the New York Yankees, and the All Blacks face challenges and high expectations, he emphasized that the Indian cricket team is under immense focus, with Gambhir leading the group.

"So, it's not an easy task to be coach of the Indian cricket team, but he always has the bit between his teeth, and he's a tough customer," Mills said.

Generational Shifts and the Impact of the IPL

Addressing the presence of senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in New Zealand, Mills expressed enthusiasm about seeing them play. He described both as wonderful cricketers, adding that Rohit is a player fans enjoy watching because he makes batting look easy despite having the same amount of time as anyone else. Mills noted he would have also liked to see both players featured in red-ball cricket on New Zealand soil.

Regarding India's transition into leadership under Shubman Gill, Mills praised Gill as a charismatic and talented player with a full array of strokes. He reflected on the rotational nature of international sports, pointing out how previous eras featuring Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Rahul Dravid gave way to Kohli and Rohit, and now to a new generation of players.

Mills credited the Indian Premier League (IPL) with facilitating a seamless transition, particularly in white-ball cricket. He noted that the tournament exposes not just top-tier Indian stars, but also second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth-rated players to international cricketers, accelerating their development in a way that provides a significant advantage to India.

Evolution of New Zealand Cricket Infrastructure

Discussing the progress of New Zealand cricket over the last decade, Mills observed a clear improvement compared to earlier eras. He explained that during the 1980s, players like Sir Richard Hadlee and Martin Crowe largely carried the team, followed by a difficult period in the 1990s. However, he stated that New Zealand has maintained a consistently strong team across formats over the past 15 years.

Mills attributed this sustained performance to modernised training facilities, improved working environments, and a structured contract system that has established professional cricket as a viable career choice in New Zealand. This environment has built player depth to replace recently retired stars such as Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, and Trent Boult.

Highlighting the current squad, Mills praised Rachin Ravindra as a beautiful player and Tom Latham as a hardened international cricketer with a versatile skill set, alongside an effective bowling group that continues to deliver results.
