Donald Trump Praises Haley Stevens Following Her Endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers
President Donald Trump has praised Democratic Representative Haley Stevens after she broke with her party to endorse Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race. The move, coming just two days before the midterm elections, followed a public fallout between Stevens and Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump described the endorsement as major political news, praising the Michigan congresswoman for her decision to support Rogers, a former Republican representative.
“Wow, this is BIG! Congresswoman Haley Stevens, a Highly Respected Democrat, who narrowly lost in the Primary to Abdul Mohamed El-Sayed, and who has been breathlessly wined and dined by the Dumocrats to help in their Michigan Campaign for the United States Senate against Mike Rogers, has just ENDORSED Mike Rogers for Senate!” Trump wrote.
Trump further claimed that Stevens commands broad respect across the state, noting that she “showed great and almost unprecedented loyalty to the Great People of Michigan with what she did,” adding, “It’s a thing called bravery, and few people have it like just displayed by Congresswoman Haley Stevens!”
Fracture in the Democratic Camp
Stevens lost a tense Democratic primary for Michigan’s Senate seat to El-Sayed earlier in the campaign cycle. On Sunday, two days prior to the midterms, she publicly aligned with Rogers, appearing alongside him at a church in Detroit.
Addressing her decision, Stevens attributed her endorsement to comments made by El-Sayed. According to reporting from CNN, Stevens stated: “As you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for US Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he’s right, and that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”
Reports from The Hill indicated that Stevens had been scheduled to participate in a joint campaign event with El-Sayed before he dropped her from the schedule. The move followed days of public and private friction between the two politicians.
Policy Disagreements Over Foreign Aid
The rift between Stevens and El-Sayed stemmed significantly from policy differences regarding Israel and the war in Gaza, issues that were central to their earlier primary battle. El-Sayed advocates for stopping U.S. financial aid to Israel and redirecting those funds toward domestic initiatives.
In contrast, Stevens received millions of dollars from pro-Israel lobbying groups during the primary campaign, highlighting a deep policy divergence between the two Democrats.
When asked about the endorsement, El-Sayed minimized its impact. Speaking to CNN, the Democratic nominee said, “At the end of the day, I actually don’t think about Haley Stevens.”
