Brittany Mahomes, the wife of NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has made a name for herself in the world of women's sports ownership. As a co-owner of the Kansas City Current, a professional women's soccer team, she has been instrumental in the team's growth and success.

From Soccer Player to Team Owner

Before becoming a prominent figure in women's sports ownership, Mahomes had a playing career of her own. She played soccer at the University of Texas at Tyler and later played professionally in Iceland for a year. After leaving professional soccer, she launched an online fitness training business in 2019, giving her another way to stay connected to sports and help people work towards their fitness goals.

Her move into team ownership came in December 2020, when Mahomes joined Angie and Chris Long in bringing a new National Women's Soccer League team to Kansas City. The club was first known as Kansas City NWSL before taking the name Kansas City Current in 2021.

This was an important step in her career because she was no longer involved in sports only as a player. She now had a role in building a club, helping it grow and giving women's soccer a stronger place in the city.

CPKC Stadium: A Symbol of Women's Soccer Commitment

One of the clearest signs of the Current's ambition came in 2021, when the owners announced plans for a new stadium. The project gave the Current a chance to create a permanent home designed specifically for women's professional soccer rather than having to share a venue built for another team.

CPKC Stadium, which opened in March 2024, has a capacity of around 11,500 and was privately funded by the club's ownership group. It hosted its first match on March 16, 2024, when the Current beat the Portland Thorns 5-4 in front of a sold-out crowd.

The stadium matters because facilities affect how athletes train, compete and prepare for games. A dedicated venue also gives a team greater control over its matchday experience, ticket sales, events and relationships with fans.

For Mahomes, the project connects her background as a soccer player with her work as an owner. She knows the sport from the playing side, but she is now also part of a group investing in the places and resources that help professional athletes do their jobs.

Creating Her Own Identity Beyond Patrick Mahomes

Being married to one of the NFL's biggest stars naturally brings public attention. Patrick's achievements with the Chiefs have made the Mahomes family familiar to football fans, but Mahomes' work with the Current gives her a separate role in professional sports.

She has a playing background, experience in fitness entrepreneurship and a stake in a growing soccer club. These are parts of her career that exist beyond her relationship with Patrick, even though their public profiles often overlap.

Their shared involvement in the Kansas City Current also shows how their interests have moved beyond football. Patrick built his career on the NFL field, while Mahomes has helped develop a club in a different sport. Together, they are part of a project that connects professional sports, business and the Kansas City community.

Mahomes' work does not mean she is responsible for every success the Current achieves, nor does her ownership alone solve the challenges facing women's soccer. But her involvement gives her a direct role in a club that has invested in its players and facilities and has already enjoyed success in the NWSL.

Patrick Mahomes will remain known for what he achieves with the Chiefs. Mahomes, meanwhile, is building a sporting story of her own through the Kansas City Current, with CPKC Stadium standing as one of the clearest signs of what that work has helped create.
