18 Killed, 25 Injured in Stampede at Kolkata Durga Puja Pandal
A severe stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata resulted in the deaths of 18 people and left at least 25 others injured on Saturday night. First responders and officials indicated that the panic was triggered by a loudspeaker announcement made at the venue, which caused immediate chaos among the thousands gathered for the festival.
The tragedy unfolded between 7 pm and 8 pm as large crowds waited to gain entry into the pandal. The location is characterized by narrow lanes capable of accommodating only three to four individuals walking side by side at any given point. Details regarding the exact sequence of events continued to emerge late Saturday night as authorities managed the situation during West Bengal's peak festive period.
Factors Leading to Panic
According to local residents, multiple conditions combined to create the deadly situation. These included the narrow access lanes, a shortage of trained volunteers, sudden rain that pushed crowds toward the pandal structure, and an alleged warning broadcast over loudspeakers claiming that the pandal might collapse if the crowd was not controlled.
A local resident noted that the volunteers present were primarily local youths with limited training in crowd control. Residents also stated that no emergency ambulance appeared to be on standby at the venue prior to the incident.
The deceased and injured were taken to Calcutta Medical College, located less than two kilometers from the site. Distraught family members gathered at the facility through midnight to receive updates on their relatives.
Victims and Reactions
Among those who died was Sriparna Poddar, 26, a nurse at a private hospital from Baidyabati in Hooghly district, who was visiting the puja with friends on her day off. Another victim was identified as Kalpana Yadav, 42, also from Hooghly, who had traveled with her family to see the city's pandals. Her children survived the incident.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the hospital and confirmed that police have detained the puja organizers along with private security personnel hired to direct the crowds. Adhikari cited initial briefings stating that the stampede occurred directly following the loudspeaker announcement made by the organizers.
Adhikari stated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah cancelled his scheduled programs in the state for the following day to visit the injured and affected families. Adhikari urged all puja committees across the city to coordinate with police and resolve safety gaps at entry and exit points, stressing that public safety must take precedence over festival themes.
Investigation and Relief Measures
The state government has set up a fact-finding panel to investigate the tragedy. Forensic experts and fire brigade personnel are examining the site, and officials plan to review CCTV footage to establish the timeline and responsibilities.
The Prime Minister announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased individual and Rs 50,000 for each injured person.
Former chief minister and All India Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and sadness over the loss of lives, offering prayers for the injured and support for the families. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Nilanjan Das raised concerns regarding criminal negligence and accountability on the part of the Kolkata Police and the administration.
