V Srivatsa of UTI Asset Management Company (AMC) has cautioned investors regarding current midcap valuations, suggesting that largecap stocks offer a more favorable risk-reward proposition in the current market environment.

According to Srivatsa, midcap stocks are currently trading at a 50 percent premium to largecap stocks, even though both segments are expected to grow along similar lines in the near term.

Record Valuation Premiums and Mean Reversion Risks

While acknowledging that the longer-term outlook for midcaps remains superior to that of largecaps, Srivatsa highlighted that the valuation premium has reached a record high. This extreme premium raises the possibility of a mean reversion in the market.

The potential for mean reversion is particularly notable as growth begins to pick up for largecap stocks. Consequently, on a risk-reward basis, Srivatsa views largecaps as a superior investment option at this juncture.
