Usha Vance, the wife of Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance, narrowly avoided a fall while stepping off a helicopter with her nine-week-old son, Alec Neel Vance, on Monday, October 5. The incident occurred at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland as the family was preparing for a trip to Alaska.

Vance was carrying her newborn baby strapped to her chest and holding a large leather diaper bag while descending the steps of the aircraft. After taking two steps down while holding the handrail, she appeared to lose her balance and stumble forward. She quickly steadied herself, regained her balance, and ensured her baby was safe.

Details of the Incident

According to reports, Vance smiled and calmed her baby immediately after recovering her footing. She then turned back toward the helicopter, seemingly to signal to her husband that she was unhurt. Nearby officers did not move to assist her during the stumble.

Vance was seen speaking to the officers on the tarmac, reportedly saying, "I nearly fell down stairs." According to lip reader Nicola Hickling, who spoke to the Irish Star, Vance also added, "I'm okay, and he's fine... thank you." Shortly after the incident, JD Vance exited the helicopter behind her, carrying their four-year-old daughter, Mirabel.

Social Media Response and Protocol Questions

Footage of the moment circulated on social media platform X, drawing concern and sparking a debate regarding the actions of the personnel standing nearby. Several users questioned why the officers standing at attention did not step in to assist Vance as she carried both a newborn and a diaper bag down the steps.

Some commentators defended the personnel, citing military protocol, while others argued that safety should have taken precedence. Other users focused on Vance's quick reaction, praising her ability to protect her child from injury during the sudden loss of balance.

Vance Family Travel

The family was transiting through Joint Base Andrews on their way to Anchorage, Alaska. JD Vance is scheduled to headline a Republican National Committee rally in Anchorage to support the reelection campaign of Senator Dan Sullivan, who is running against Democrat Mary Peltola.

The Vances welcomed their youngest child, Alec Neel Vance, on July 19 at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. In a social media statement at the time, the family shared that their older children—Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4—were excited to welcome their new brother.
