Acquiring initial customers and maintaining long-term retention remains a significant hurdle for emerging startups. At a TechCrunch Disrupt panel, two startup founders and a venture capitalist outlined distinct approaches to building and keeping an early audience, detailing strategies that span social media marketing, traditional sales tactics, and product usage analytics.

The discussion featured Grant Lee, founder and chief executive officer of AI-powered presentation software company Gamma; Elia Wallen, founder and CEO of corporate travel platform Engine; and Crystal Huang, a general partner at Google Ventures. Their insights highlighted that viral social media exposure is not the sole route to business growth.

Aligning Influencer Strategies with Audience Segments

In an environment where AI startups leverage founder online personalities for visibility, social media is frequently viewed as a primary tool for early outreach. Gamma deployed an influencer program, known as its Ambassador or "Gambassador" program, to help scale its platform prior to achieving a multi-billion dollar valuation. However, Lee cautioned that deploying creator marketing without strategic execution fails to yield sustainable sales growth.

Lee emphasized that creators must be selected to target specific user groups and use cases. He noted that marketing needs differ significantly between management consultants and teams designing decks for chief marketing officers. Furthermore, Lee stated that founders must invest time in educating creators on how to articulate a product's value proposition rather than treating influencer marketing as an automated initiative.

Traditional Sales and In-Person Engagement

Alternative customer acquisition methods can be equally effective without relying on social media channels. Wallen shared that Engine, which manages travel bookings for midsize companies, bootstrapped its business to $150 million in bookings prior to taking outside investment, operating without a public social media strategy.

Instead, Engine relied heavily on direct outreach and events. Wallen explained that traditional methods like cold calling remain effective, arguing that many companies overlook an extensive offline client base by assuming direct phone calls are outdated. During its early stages, Engine also used creative in-person engagement tactics, such as hiring a magician at events to draw prospective clients to their booth.

Leveraging Usage Data to Drive Customer Retention

Beyond customer acquisition, retaining users requires deep analysis of early engagement. Huang noted that startup founders can gain significant insight by evaluating product usage metrics to see if customer activity is recurring, expanding, or generating referral traffic.

Huang stressed the importance of identifying highly engaged users who become brand advocates or demonstrate interest in working with the company. Tracking these early usage patterns allows startups to cultivate passionate product evangelists who help drive long-term sustainability.
