Skyroot Aerospace Successfully Launches Vikram-1 in India's First Private Orbital Mission

Skyroot Aerospace has successfully completed India's first private orbital launch, deploying multiple technology demonstration payloads and commemorative items into low Earth orbit. The mission, named "Mission Aagaman," marks the official entry of the country's private sector into the orbital launch market.

The maiden voyage of the Vikram-1 rocket took place from the first launch pad, lifting off at 12:05 pm amid cloudy skies. The four-stage, seven-storey-tall launch vehicle left behind thick clouds of orange smoke as it ascended. A "planned hold" due to apparent navigation issues had previously forced a revised launch time of 12:05 pm.

The historic launch was witnessed at the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Mission Control Center by Skyroot founders Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, both former ISRO scientists. Also in attendance were ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan, former ISRO chiefs, astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, and Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh.

A Milestone in Private Space Exploration

With the successful execution of Mission Aagaman, Skyroot Aerospace achieved its first successful orbital mission using the Vikram-1 launch vehicle. This achievement represents a major technological step forward from the suborbital flight of the company's Vikram-S rocket in 2022.

During its ascent, Vikram-1 successfully deployed its primary payloads one after another into a 450-kilometre low Earth orbit. The payloads included various technology demonstrators developed by Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed, and Skyroot's in-house team.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Skyroot Aerospace team following the launch. In a post on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister called the launch a defining moment in India's space journey, noting that the growing participation of the private sector is opening new frontiers and accelerating innovation.

Commemorative Tributes and Micro-Art Payloads

In addition to functional satellites, the Vikram-1 rocket carried several commemorative items into orbit. Among these was a micro-art payload featuring micro-sculptures of three key figures of India's space and scientific journey: Vikram Sarabhai, Sir C. V. Raman, and former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Skyroot noted that it proudly names its rockets and engines after these visionaries.

The rocket also carried an 18-karat gold rocket model, a handwritten postcard from Prime Minister Modi bearing the message "Vande Mataram," and various postcards submitted by engineers, scientists, and Indian astronauts.

Skyroot Aerospace stated that the engineering data gathered during this test flight will be thoroughly studied. This analysis will help verify the rocket's guidance and navigation systems, supporting the development of future commercial satellite missions.

Advanced Technologies and Payload Demonstrations

The flight successfully confirmed the performance of the rocket's all-carbon composite structure and its 3D-printed engines under actual flight conditions. According to Skyroot, these technologies represent industry-first innovations.

The diverse array of payloads deployed during the mission showcased several new space technologies. Among them was Embrace, a mission by Cosmoserve Space designed to demonstrate robotic arms that could eventually be used to remove space debris from orbit. Another payload, Solaras, developed by Grahaa Space, is a compact satellite designed to test new capabilities in low Earth orbit.

Skyroot's own experimental satellite, SCOPE, was also launched to evaluate space technologies for future missions. Additionally, the rocket deployed Cosmic Bloom, an artistic lab-grown diamond created by Cosmos Diamonds, alongside uD3PP and mD3RN, two technology demonstration payloads developed by Germany-based company DCubed.
