A historic unbeaten double century from opening batter Shubman Gill, combined with a century from captain Rohit Sharma, guided India to a record-breaking eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in Guwahati. Chasing a mammoth target of 406 runs, India completed the chase in the 44th over to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Gill remained unbeaten on 223 runs off just 133 deliveries, while Rohit Sharma contributed 101 runs to lay a solid foundation for the historic chase. With this victory, the hosts will now look to secure a clean sweep in the remaining matches of the series.

West Indies Build Massive Total with Three Centuries

Earlier in the match, West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first. Although they lost opener Keacy Carty early for just 9 runs, John Campbell and Shai Hope rebuilt the innings aggressively, scoring 96 runs during the powerplay overs.

The duo put together a formidable 147-run partnership for the second wicket. Campbell reached his century, scoring 101 runs before being dismissed by Gurnoor Brar. Amir Jangoo then joined Hope at the crease at number four, and the pair continued to dominate the Indian bowling attack with a 182-run partnership for the third wicket.

Hope completed his own century before being dismissed by spinner Kuldeep Yadav for 104 runs. Jangoo also reached the triple-figure mark, scoring a century to put the visitors in a commanding position. Late contributions of 24 runs from Roston Chase and an unbeaten 14 from Shamar Joseph helped West Indies finish their 50 overs at a massive total of 405 runs.

India's Powerful Opening Stand Sets Up the Chase

Faced with a target of 406, India's openers started the chase with high intent. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill accumulated 92 runs in the powerplay, keeping the required run rate under control. The opening pair went on to forge a massive 255-run partnership, with both batters reaching their respective centuries.

The breakthrough for West Indies came when Jayden Seales dismissed Rohit Sharma for 101 runs. Virat Kohli then came to the crease but was dismissed relatively cheaply for 29 runs. Despite the wickets, Gill continued his aggressive batting display to keep India on course for victory.

Gill Rewrites Record Books in Guwahati

Gill's unbeaten knock of 223 runs came off 133 balls and featured 26 boundaries and eight sixes. During his innings, he reached his double century in just 117 deliveries, registering the fastest double century in One Day International (ODI) history. He also became only the second player in ODI history to score multiple double centuries, joining his opening partner Rohit Sharma.

India comfortably crossed the finish line in the 44th over with Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad remaining unbeaten at the crease. Gill was named the Player of the Match for his record-breaking performance.

Reflecting on his physical exertion during the post-match presentation, Gill noted the challenging playing conditions in Guwahati. He stated that every part of his body was cramping and remarked on the intense afternoon heat, adding that after fielding for the first 13 overs, it already felt as though they had been on the field for 20 to 25 overs due to the way the West Indies batters played.
