Royal Challengers Bangalore have secured the fourth and final playoff spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Their qualification was confirmed after Delhi Capitals failed to defeat Mumbai Indians in a crucial, must-win league match.

Heading into the encounter, Delhi Capitals needed a victory to reach 16 points and secure their place in the playoffs. Royal Challengers Bangalore were already sitting on 16 points, while Delhi Capitals had 14 points. Because both teams possessed similar net run rates, a win for Delhi Capitals would have allowed them to qualify. However, a spirited performance from Mumbai Indians ended Delhi's campaign.

Mumbai Indians Restrict Delhi Capitals

Batting first, Delhi Capitals struggled against a disciplined Mumbai Indians bowling attack. Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling display with an excellent opening spell, finishing with figures of 3 for 25 in his four overs. Delhi Capitals managed to post a total of 159 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Among the Delhi batsmen, Rovman Powell top-scored with 43 runs, while Rishabh Pant contributed 39 runs. The rest of the batting lineup failed to make a significant impact under pressure from Mumbai's bowlers, leaving Delhi with a total that ultimately proved insufficient to defend.

Mumbai Indians Chase Down Target

In response, Mumbai Indians chased down the target of 160 runs with one over to spare, finishing at 160 for 5. The successful chase was anchored by Ishan Kishan, who scored 48 runs, alongside Dewald Brewis with 39 runs and Tim David with 34 runs.

The victory by Mumbai Indians successfully knocked Delhi Capitals out of the tournament, leaving them at 14 points. Consequently, Royal Challengers Bangalore officially progressed to the IPL 2022 playoffs as the fourth qualified team.
