The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set for another scheduling conflict with the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2027. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the twelfth edition of the PSL will take place from March 18 to May 2, 2027. This decision places the tournament on a direct collision course with IPL 2027 for the second consecutive season.

The eight-team PSL tournament will retain its current format, culminating in the final on May 2. Although the official schedule for the 20th edition of the IPL has not yet been released, indications suggest the tournament could also begin around mid-March. This overlap means the two prominent T20 leagues will once again compete for players, viewership, and global attention.

BCCI Explores Earlier Start for IPL 2027

The potential scheduling overlap comes as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considers moving the IPL to an earlier start date. IPL Governing Council chairman Arun Dhumal previously indicated that the board was exploring an early-March start to ensure the tournament concludes by mid-May.

Speaking to PTI, Saikia explained that discussions are ongoing within the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council regarding the timing. The primary motivation is to avoid adverse weather conditions, such as pre-monsoon rainfall and extreme heat, which typically affect the latter stages of the tournament in late May.

Saikia stated that instructions have been given to the general manager of games development, former India fast bowler Abey Kuruvilla, to identify suitable windows. The objective is to start the tournament by March 10 and conclude it by May 15, safeguarding the playoffs and finals from unfavorable weather.

Player Withdrawals and Contractual Fallout

The scheduling clash is particularly significant following the player availability issues that arose during the previous season. Several overseas players withdrew from their PSL commitments to join IPL franchises as replacement players.

Among those who departed was Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson. Originally signed directly by Quetta Gladiators, Johnson withdrew citing personal reasons and subsequently joined Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for Nathan Ellis.

Similarly, Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka, who had been signed by Lahore Qalandars, joined Rajasthan Royals as a replacement player. Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani also withdrew from his contract with Islamabad United to join Kolkata Knight Riders. Following his withdrawal, Muzarabani was handed a two-year ban from participating in the PSL.

PSL 12 Preparations and Tournament Growth

The March 18 to May 2 window for PSL 12 was finalised during a PSL Governing Council meeting held in London on September 1, following consultations with franchises and other stakeholders. The tournament will continue with its eight-team format, which was established after the addition of Hyderabad Kingsmen and the expansion of the league in 2026. The 2026 season also marked a transition from the traditional player draft to an auction system.

In the 2026 final, Peshawar Zalmi ended a nine-year title drought by defeating debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen at the Gaddafi Stadium. The final attracted a record crowd of 32,461 spectators.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed optimism about building on this momentum for the upcoming season. Naqvi noted that the eleventh edition demonstrated the league's capabilities through record crowds and broadcasts, adding that the board is committed to raising the bar further for PSL 12.
