Pramod Bhagat Set to Lead India as Flagbearer at Para Asian Games
NEW DELHI — Tokyo Paralympics gold medallist and Padma Shri awardee Pramod Bhagat is set to represent India as the flagbearer at the upcoming Para Asian Games. Entering his fifth appearance at the continental tournament, the veteran shuttler aims to add another gold medal to his career tally while leading the national contingent.
Bhagat enters the competition with six previous Asian Para Games medals, comprising two golds and four bronzes. Despite his established success on international stages, Bhagat stated that the honour of carrying the national flag stands apart from his individual medals and accolades.
Carrying the Tricolour and Pursuit of Gold
Recalling his earlier appearances at the event, Bhagat noted that watching previous flagbearers left a strong impression on him. Being selected for the role at this stage of his career has brought a fresh sense of excitement, which he described as incomparable to his prior achievements.
While preparing for his flagbearing duties, Bhagat remains focused on his primary sporting objective. "My expectation is gold, but it won't be easy," Bhagat said, noting the increasing level of competition across the event.
Bhagat highlighted the necessity of adapting over time, pointing out that significant changes occur during the four-year intervals between games. His strategy focuses on evaluating past performances, adjusting to evolving opponents, and refining his preparation ahead of each campaign.
Targeting Team Success and Ecosystem Growth
Beyond his personal ambitions, Bhagat expressed confidence in the overall strength of the Indian para badminton team. He stated that the contingent aims to secure more than 10 medals in badminton at the Para Asian Games.
He pointed to India's broader progress in para-sports, highlighting that the country exceeded 100 total medals at the previous Asian Para Games. Bhagat credited this growth to enhanced training infrastructure, improved equipment, and consistent support from both government and private entities.
Reflecting on the evolution of para badminton since the early days of his career, Bhagat expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking a personal interest in para-sports. He noted that official support and increased visibility have motivated private organisations to invest in athletes, establishing a stronger overall ecosystem for Indian para-sport competitors.
