Indian all-rounder Naman Dhir made a strong impression on his T20I debut against the West Indies, delivering a performance that has raised questions regarding Washington Sundar's future in India's white-ball cricket setups. The 25-year-old, primarily recognized as a batting all-rounder during the Indian Premier League (IPL), surprised observers by delivering a full four-over spell, taking three wickets for 31 runs to help India restrict the West Indies to 171 runs.

Dhir's bowling contribution on the international stage stands in contrast to his recent domestic campaign. During the IPL 2026 season, he scored 318 runs but was not called upon to bowl a single over. His performance in the first T20I has now demonstrated his capability to provide India with an additional bowling option in the shorter formats of the game.

Srikkanth's Assessment of Dhir and Sundar

Former India cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikkanth has suggested that Dhir's emergence could significantly impact Washington Sundar's prospects in limited-overs cricket. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth pointed out that Dhir, who joined the squad as a replacement player, has made a compelling case to retain his position.

"Naman Dhir has now come in at Washington Sundar's place as a replacement player," Srikkanth said. "Washington Sundar keeps getting injured after every two matches. Now Naman Dhir has come in as his replacement and finished him. How can you drop Naman Dhir now from ODIs and T20Is? He has immediately grabbed that spot. Now Washington Sundar can only play for India in Test cricket."

Srikkanth also praised Dhir's tactical adaptability during the match, noting how the bowler adjusted his pace after being hit. "When he bowls fast, he gets hit for sixes. So he immediately slows the ball down, which shows that he's a very thoughtful bowler. He's ideal for T20 cricket. He bowls in such a way that he envisions himself batting and how one would bowl to him. That's how much of a thinking cricketer he looks to be. That's why he's an intelligent bowler," Srikkanth added.

Debate Over the Impact Player Rule

Dhir's bowling display has also revived discussions surrounding the IPL's Impact Player rule. Srikkanth argued that the regulation hinders the development of genuine all-rounders in Indian cricket, as teams often substitute specialized players rather than utilizing multi-skilled individuals.

"This is why the Impact Player rule should be removed in the IPL. That's how you'll produce genuine all-rounders," Srikkanth stated. "Today he bowled four overs, but even if he gives you two overs on a consistent basis, it'll be huge for India and MI." Srikkanth expressed optimism that Dhir would receive more bowling opportunities in future IPL seasons, predicting he would secure wickets if given the chance.

Dhir's Perspective on His Bowling Role

Addressing the media after the match, Dhir clarified that bowling has always been an active part of his skillset rather than a newly acquired ability. He attributed his lack of bowling in the IPL to team strategies influenced by tournament rules.

“I have been bowling for quite some time; it is not as if I have just started now," Dhir said during the post-match press conference. "In the IPL, because of the impact-player rule, you don’t see me bowling as much. But it is not that I haven’t bowled. I have bowled a lot and have good experience here as well. Hopefully, I will continue doing well in the future.”

Dhir explained that his approach during the debut match was guided by observing teammate Axar Patel's spell earlier in the innings. “I saw Axar Bhai bowling earlier, and he was bowling a little slower and getting some turn. That was in my mind - if I bowled a little slower, there would be good grip from the wicket, and I could get them out. So I just stuck to my plans and kept things basic. I think I got a good result from that," he said.

He further emphasized that he maintains an equal focus on both disciplines during training sessions, ensuring he is prepared for any match situation. “Again, I will say that even if you haven’t seen me bowling, I have been bowling as much as I have since I came here and I have practised just as much before this. It is not as if, as a batting all-rounder or bowling all-rounder, I have neglected one aspect. Yes, my batting is a plus point, but at the same time I am working just as hard on my bowling,” Dhir added.

Series Context and Upcoming Match

India currently holds a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, following their 2-1 victory in the preceding three-match ODI series. The second T20I of the series is scheduled to be played on Friday at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.
