The refining and petrochemical sectors have experienced significant changes over the past decade, driven by increasing pressure to reduce carbon intensity, boost energy efficiency, and process complex feedstocks. In response to these operational shifts, chemical processes increasingly rely on specialized catalysts and adsorbents to improve product quality, lower emissions, and maintain long-term reliability.

Founded in 2016 by Dr. Meritxell Vila-Fontes, catalysis and chemical engineering firm MERYT develops and supplies high-performance catalysts and adsorbents engineered for severe industrial environments. The company supports industrial operations across refining, petrochemical, and hydrogen-related applications, offering solutions for processes including hydrotreatment, reforming, hydrogenation, and methanol synthesis.

Regional Strategy and Specialized Applications

MERYT provides adsorbents designed for gas and liquid purification, specifically targeting difficult-to-treat feedstocks. The company has also expanded its advanced catalyst offerings into decarbonization applications, such as carbon dioxide capture and conversion, hydrogen production, and bio-refinery feedstocks.

The company maintains an operational presence in Spain, the United Arab Emirates, and China, combining technical advisory services with local logistics and field support. Dr. Vila-Fontes noted that regional market priorities vary, with Europe focusing on sustainability and compliance, the Middle East emphasizing reliability and energy transition, and Asia prioritizing speed of innovation.

To reduce downtime for industrial clients, MERYT integrates local stock inventory and on-site support alongside its technical operations. According to Dr. Vila-Fontes, the company's focus on local presence and rapid logistics forms a core element of its service delivery model.

Research Collaborations and Advanced Materials

Research and development serves as a primary operational pillar for MERYT. The firm collaborates with international research centers and universities to translate scientific research into industrial applications. These academic and technological partnerships focus on developing next-generation materials.

Among its current development initiatives, MERYT is advancing Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs). These materials are being developed for applications in carbon dioxide capture, catalytic conversion, and atmospheric water harvesting, expanding the company's technological scope in circular economy and emissions-reduction sectors.

Five-Year Infrastructure and Growth Roadmap

MERYT has outlined a five-year growth plan aimed at expanding its manufacturing and research infrastructure. The roadmap includes constructing a dedicated catalysts and advanced materials manufacturing facility within the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) region.

Additionally, the company plans to establish a pilot plant in Spain dedicated to MOF development. Both upcoming facilities will be supported by state-of-the-art research laboratories, positioning MERYT to expand its market presence across the GCC, Europe, and Latin America.
