Atletico nearly doubled their lead shortly after, but Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker produced a brilliant save to deny Alvarez from long range, keeping the deficit at a single goal.
Szoboszlai Equalises Before Half-Time
Liverpool's recovery began late in the first half. Bradley Barcola, whose transfer from Paris Saint-Germain could eventually cost Liverpool up to 123 million pounds ($166 million), missed a clear opportunity when he failed to beat Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak in a one-on-one situation.
Despite the missed chance, Liverpool kept the pressure on. Ronald Araujo's flick set up Szoboszlai, who found the bottom corner of the net in the 40th minute to level the score before the break.
Early in the second half, Barcola missed another significant opportunity to score his first Liverpool goal, firing wide after being set up by Wirtz. However, the home side did not have to wait long to take the lead.
Mac Allister Seals the Win
Alexis Mac Allister, who had expressed frustration on the eve of the match regarding the lack of a new contract offer from Liverpool, scored the decisive goal. While teammates Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch recently agreed to new deals, Mac Allister had been linked with a move to Atletico during the transfer window.
The Argentinian international received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and arrowed a shot into the net using his weaker left foot, celebrating the goal in front of the Kop.
The joy of taking the lead was tempered shortly before the hour mark when Barcola pulled up holding his calf and had to be substituted. Iraola will hope the injury is not a serious setback for the winger.
Defensive Resilience Secures Three Points
Liverpool showed strong defensive resilience in the final half-hour to protect their lead. Atletico struggled to create clear openings, with Alvarez firing too close to Alisson on one of their few opportunities. At the other end, a last-ditch challenge by Robin Le Normand prevented Isak from adding a third goal for Liverpool.
Szoboszlai was named player of the match and reflected on the competitive nature of the contest in an interview with TNT Sports. He noted that it was a very even match, describing it as a "50/51" game with constant ups and downs, and expressed his happiness at returning to win on a special Champions League night.
