Jharkhand Government Holds First Formal Talks With Protesting Students Over Exam Irregularities
The Jharkhand government has held its first formal talks with representatives of protesting students in Ranchi, two weeks after demonstrations began over alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations. The meeting, which lasted for an hour and a half on Friday night, concluded with the government seeking time to examine the students' demands, while protest organizers announced that their agitation would continue.
The discussions took place from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm at the State Guest House. A 10-member delegation from the JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch, one of the two main factions leading the protests, met with a panel of four state ministers and a senior bureaucrat to present their grievances regarding examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
Key Demands and Government Response
During the meeting, the student delegation reiterated several key demands. These include the immediate cancellation of the JPSC Combined Civil Services Examination-14 and a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged recruitment scam. The students also demanded the involvement of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) if financial irregularities are uncovered during the investigation.
Additionally, the protesters demanded the cancellation of all recruitment examinations allegedly linked to the main accused in the case, Abhay Tiwari, also known as Manoj Tiwari, who has already been arrested. Following the discussions, ministers informed reporters that the government is actively considering these demands.
While the government delegation stated it would discuss the matters with Chief Minister Hemant Soren before making a final decision, student representatives noted that no specific assurances were given during the session. Rajesh Prasad, an organizer for the JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch, stated during a press conference that the government had requested time to evaluate their demands. He confirmed that the protest would continue until August 10, warning that the movement would persist if their demands are not implemented on the ground by that date.
Delegation Details and Internal Divisions
The government panel for the talks included ministers Deepika Pandey Singh of the Congress, Sudivya Kumar Sonu and Chamra Linda of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and Sanjay Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), alongside Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh. The student delegation was escorted to the venue in three vehicles under the supervision of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
The 10-member student delegation consisted of Ravindra Paswan, Piyush Kumar, Rajesh Prasad, Neetu Kujur, Ankit Raj, Kartik Soren, Shalu Kumari, Ravindra Kumar Ravi, Anand Kumar, and Ankit Kumar. According to government sources, the JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch originally submitted a list of 11 delegates, which was revised to 10 after the government requested a reconstitution of the group. The reason for this change remains unclear.
The talks also brought to light internal divisions within the student movement. While the state administration chose to negotiate with the JPSC-JSSC Reform Manch, another prominent student platform, the JPSC-JSSC Abhyarthi Nyay Manch, expressed dissatisfaction. The latter group, which had previously announced its own separate list of delegates, voiced disappointment at being excluded from the formal discussions.
