India have registered a milestone in Twenty20 International cricket by becoming the first team to smash 400 sixes in a single calendar year. The achievement was reached across 40 T20I matches played in 2026, marking a 38.4 per cent increase from the 289 sixes India recorded over the same number of matches in 2022.

The 400th six came during the 19th over against New Zealand, when Naman Dhir hit a top-edge over fine leg on the second ball of the over. The team's six-hitting spree is currently paused for eight weeks before Shreyas Iyer's squad resumes action in a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in December.

Milestones and Series Numbers Against New Zealand

India's aggressive batting contributed significantly to their 3-2 series victory against New Zealand. Across the calendar year, Indian batters hit 142 sixes against New Zealand alone, which is the highest number of sixes India have hit against any single opponent in a calendar year. During the series, New Zealand batters hit 61 sixes, leaving a difference of 81 sixes—equivalent to 486 runs—between the two teams.

The milestone comes during a successful period for India in the shortest format, with the side having secured back-to-back T20 World Cup titles.

Powerplay Dominance and Top-Order Statistics

The majority of India's sixes in 2026 originated from their top-three batting order. Abhishek Sharma led the tally with 86 sixes, followed by Ishan Kishan with 60 and Sanju Samson with 50. India's top order smashed 145 sixes during the first six overs, enabling the team to cross the 100-run mark in the Powerplay on two occasions.

Overall in 2026, Indian batters amassed 2,681 runs across 239 overs in their 40 T20Is. The team maintained a run rate of 11.21 and a combined strike rate of 189.96 throughout the year.

Technical Shift and Coaching Perspectives

Addressing the change in strategy, power-hitting coach Julian Wood explained that Indian batters are approaching risk differently compared to other international teams. According to Wood, players are focusing on mastering hit-ability rather than managing traditional risk, supported by a large pool of players playing T20 cricket.

Wood noted that batting evolution has made length balls hit-able, leaving bowlers with very little margin for error. He highlighted young batters like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has hit sixes off bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins in the IPL, as reflective of a mindset where batters look to capitalise whenever bowlers miss their length.

Sunrisers Hyderabad batting coach Hariesh Jaikumar also pointed to an overall improvement in batting quality and a lack of inhibitions. He stated that while commentators often attribute high scores to flatter pitches, similar pitches were prepared in previous years, emphasizing that modern batters have evolved to attack early rather than relying strictly on middle- or lower-order finishers.
