Hindu Munnani Demands Action Against Preacher Mohan C Lazarus Over FCRA Remarks
The Hindu Munnani has strongly condemned a speech by evangelical preacher Mohan C Lazarus regarding proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). The organisation alleged that the remarks, which appeared in a viral video, represent an attempt to instigate the Christian community against the nation's sovereignty and democracy.
Mohan C Lazarus, who leads the international ministry Jesus Redeems, called for prayers against the Central government's proposed FCRA amendments. In his address, Lazarus claimed that the Bill specifically targets Christian churches, missionary organisations, and educational institutions across India. He suggested that the new provisions could lead to the freezing and seizure of assets belonging to Christian institutions, which could then be auctioned and handed over to corporate entities or groups associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Hindu Munnani.
Controversial Claims on FCRA Amendments
In the video, Lazarus argued that the Central government plans to use the receipt of foreign funds, even for minor activities, as a pretext to confiscate properties. He questioned the future of schools, colleges, and universities run by Catholic and Church of South India (CSI) administrations, as well as institutions like CMC Vellore, which were built using both domestic and foreign funds.
Lazarus described the proposed legislation as a "dangerous" and "cunning" law designed to "steal the Lord's property." He urged his followers to pray against the enactment of the Bill, asserting that God, rather than the Parliament or the government, rules over India.
In response, the Hindu Munnani accused Lazarus of spreading false narratives and attempting to incite communal tension. The organisation has called on the Central government to take stern legal action against the preacher under appropriate sections of the law, arguing that his statements threaten democratic principles and public order.
Demands for Action Against VCK Leader
In a separate statement, the Hindu Munnani demanded the removal of VCK MLA and minister Vanniarasu over his remarks on the FCRA Bill. The organisation alleged that Vanniarasu's speech on the floor of the state assembly was intended to instigate Muslims and Christians against the proposed legislation.
Meanwhile, other developments have emerged in the state. On August 11, Dalit converts to Christianity held a demonstration in Vellore, demanding the extension of Scheduled Caste (SC) benefits to their community. Additionally, a video surfaced featuring Assembly Speaker JCD Prabakar, who stated his personal commitment to completing his prayers under any circumstances, asserting he would not stop his prayers even if offered Rs 1,000 crore.
BJP Raises Concerns Over YMCA Event
Tamil Nadu BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy has also raised questions regarding an event at the YMCA College of Physical Education. Thirupathy criticised Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister Rajeshkumar for defending the singing of a Christian religious song before the state anthem, Tamil Thai Vazhthu, at the college. The minister had explained that the order of songs was due to the institution being a Christian college.
Thirupathy pointed out that the state assembly had recently passed a Bill requiring the Tamil anthem to be sung first at such events. Furthermore, the BJP spokesperson questioned whether the minister was aware that the college principal, George Abraham, is currently out on bail while facing charges in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case, and had been reappointed to his post despite the ongoing legal proceedings.
