HD Kumaraswamy Dares Karnataka Government to Arrest Him Over Alleged Controversies
Union Minister and former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy addressed a press conference at the Janata Dal (Secular) headquarters, JP Bhavan, on October 15, launching a detailed attack on the Karnataka Congress government. During the address, Kumaraswamy raised allegations regarding the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises (NICE) land controversy, a purported video involving Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and the alleged misuse of state police machinery. Directly challenging the state administration, the JD(S) leader dared the government to arrest him if it possessed the courage.
Kumaraswamy accused the state government of attempting to use official machinery to silence him and suppress political opposition. He questioned the administration's handling of reported irregularities and called for impartial investigations into the matters he presented. Pointing to recent comments by Mallikarjun Kharge concerning official probes, Kumaraswamy noted that Enforcement Directorate intervention had previously uncovered certain alleged irregularities that might have otherwise remained hidden. He called on the government to investigate the recruitment of 24 engineers through the Karnataka Public Service Commission during Kharge's tenure as Panchayat Raj Minister, as well as the recruitment of Assistant Executive Engineers (AEE).
Allegations Over NICE Land and Sting Operation Narrative
During his press conference, Kumaraswamy stated that the controversy surrounding a purported sting operation was deliberately highlighted to distract the public from the NICE land issue. He questioned how discussions regarding the sting operation held during a confidential Cabinet meeting were leaked to the media. Kumaraswamy suggested the timing was calculated to coincide with his scheduled press briefing on the NICE controversy in order to reduce public focus on his claims.
The former Chief Minister further alleged that meetings took place between Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and individuals associated with the NICE project, citing a specific gathering at the Shangri-La hotel. He asserted that a contractor connected to NICE remained in contact with the Chief Minister and his associates, and claimed that members of the Chief Minister's family were linked to approximately 300 acres of land involved in the NICE matter. These assertions remain unverified allegations.
Questions Surrounding Videos and Investigation Demands
Referencing prior news reports and statements attributed to BJP leader Ramesh Jarkiholi regarding potential video releases involving Siddaramaiah, Kumaraswamy drew comparisons to controversies surrounding videos linked to Prajwal Revanna. He asked whether the government harboured concerns about further recordings being made public. He additionally alleged that individuals linked to the sting operation held meetings aimed at framing him, questioning how a woman was brought forward to submit a statement.
Kumaraswamy further questioned whether the Home Department had examined a purported telephone conversation involving the Chief Minister, pointing to details from a court stay petition seeking to halt publication of certain materials. In addition, he criticized police actions against a young worker from his party's social media team who was taken from his home for questioning, arguing that investigators should instead examine the communications and mobile devices of senior political figures connected to the issue.
Call for Judicial Inquiry and Apology for Tone
Directly addressing Home Minister G. Parameshwara, Kumaraswamy challenged the government to target him directly rather than party workers. Rejecting the assertion that the Home Department holds unlimited authority to summon individuals, he offered to go directly to the Police Commissioner's office and challenged authorities to arrest him there.
To ensure fairness, Kumaraswamy demanded an independent investigation presided over by a judge rather than a process managed by the government, expressing concern that court holidays might be leveraged to speed up arrests or obtain favourable statements. Towards the end of the press conference, the JD(S) leader offered an apology to the public for his emotional language, explaining that his outburst reflected distress over state affairs, and affirmed his resolve to continue his political stance against government suppression.
