Managing blood sugar levels involves more than dietary choices; physical movement also plays a critical role. Nutritionist Jagriti Kurani recently highlighted eight exercises on social media that can assist muscles in utilizing glucose more efficiently. These activities, which include brisk walking, resistance training, yoga, swimming, and dancing, are noted for their ability to improve insulin sensitivity and support blood sugar control, particularly for individuals with diabetes or prediabetes.

In an Instagram post, Kurani emphasized the role of muscles in metabolic health, stating that muscles are the largest users of glucose in the body. She encouraged individuals to move more to allow their muscles to naturally draw sugar from the bloodstream.

The Role of Muscle Contraction in Glucose Absorption

Dr. Deepak Kumar Mishra, Director and Head of Orthopaedic and Robotic Joint Replacement Surgery at Asian Hospital, confirmed that strong scientific evidence supports the role of regular physical activity in managing blood sugar and improving insulin sensitivity.

According to Dr. Mishra, when muscles contract during physical activity, they are able to absorb glucose directly from the bloodstream. This process occurs even without requiring as much insulin as would normally be needed. Over time, consistent exercise increases the sensitivity of muscle cells to insulin, meaning the body requires less of the hormone to transport glucose into the cells.

Dr. Mishra noted that research consistently demonstrates that both aerobic exercises—such as walking, cycling, and swimming—and strength training can improve fasting blood sugar levels, minimize post-meal glucose spikes, and lower HbA1c, which is a key marker of long-term blood sugar control. Consequently, regular exercise remains a cornerstone in preventing and managing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

How Different Exercises Impact Blood Sugar

While most physical activities offer health benefits, different types of exercise impact the body through distinct mechanisms. Dr. Mishra outlined how specific exercises contribute to glucose management:

  • Brisk walking: This is one of the most thoroughly researched and accessible forms of exercise for enhancing glucose control.
  • Resistance training: This helps build muscle mass, which in turn increases the body's capacity to store and utilize glucose.
  • Stair climbing: This provides short bursts of higher-intensity activity that can effectively lower blood sugar levels after meals.
  • Swimming: This offers a full-body workout while remaining gentle on the joints.
  • Dancing: This combines aerobic activity with muscle engagement, making it an enjoyable and sustainable option for many.
  • Yoga: While generally less effective than vigorous aerobic exercise for directly lowering blood sugar, yoga improves flexibility, strength, stress management, and overall metabolic health.

Dr. Mishra suggested that the greatest metabolic benefits are achieved by combining different forms of physical activity. Most experts agree that a combination of aerobic exercise and resistance training yields the best improvements in insulin sensitivity and long-term glucose control.

The Importance of Timing and Consistency

The timing of physical activity can also influence its effectiveness on blood sugar levels. Dr. Mishra pointed out that emerging evidence suggests exercising after a meal, particularly within 30 to 90 minutes of eating, is especially effective at reducing post-meal blood sugar spikes.

Even short periods of movement can be beneficial. Dr. Mishra noted that a 10- to 20-minute walk after lunch or dinner can significantly reduce the rise in blood sugar that typically occurs after meals. However, he emphasized that consistency is more important than perfect timing, stating that the best time to exercise is simply the time an individual can stick to consistently.
