Dimitar Berbatov Says Manchester United Deserve Relegation Zone Spot
Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov stated that the club deserved to find itself in the Premier League relegation zone following recent results. His comments came after Nottingham Forest took a 2-0 lead against Manchester City at half-time, which temporarily pushed Forest up to 16th position and dropped Manchester United down to 18th place despite holding a game in hand. Manchester United remained in 18th position after the match between Nottingham Forest and Manchester City concluded in a 3-1 victory for Forest.
Reacting to the club's situation, Berbatov offered a blunt assessment of their current performances. "The way United are playing sometimes, they deserve to be there honestly…," Berbatov said on Saturday during a broadcast segment shared by beIN SPORTS.
Seven-Game Winless Streak and Recent Results
Manchester United have not secured a victory in the Premier League since their 5-2 win against Ipswich Town in August. The club is currently enduring a seven-game winless run in domestic league play. Their next fixture is scheduled against Aston Villa on Sunday.
The drop into the bottom three follows a 2-0 defeat away at Chelsea. Manchester United delivered a stronger performance prior to the half-time break at Stamford Bridge but failed to convert their chances. The match shifted after the interval through a solo goal from Morgan Rogers and a Cole Palmer penalty, intensifying pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
Match Struggles and Red Card at Stamford Bridge
Manchester United's recent match against Chelsea unspooled during the second half. Bruno Fernandes had returned to the starting line-up as team captain after being benched in a previous loss to Bournemouth, a decision that followed his critical remarks about the team. United initially started well, enjoying the better of the first half, though Matheus Cunha had a goal disallowed and Amad missed a chance by firing over the crossbar.
The game unravelled for United after Chelsea took the lead when Rogers moved through unopposed to score. Shortly after, defender Lisandro Martinez received two yellow cards within a three-minute span. The second foul occurred when Martinez pushed his arm into the face of Wesley Fofana during a corner, resulting in a 63rd-minute penalty that Palmer converted.
Carrick Oversees Historic Winless Run
With four consecutive Premier League losses, manager Michael Carrick has now overseen Manchester United's longest winless streak since 1988. The club has collected seven points from its opening nine fixtures of the season. Despite the poor statistical run, travelling supporters warmly applauded Carrick following the final whistle at Chelsea.
Addressing the team's ongoing form after the Chelsea match, Carrick pointed to repeated issues in maintaining control across both halves of a fixture. "I think I take away a lot of the positives from the first half," Carrick said. "But the game unravelled and got away from us. It’s happened too often really so we’ve got to learn from that, and we’ve got to do something about it pretty quickly."
