Devdutt Padikkal Century Guides India to 300/5 After Challenging Opening Day in Colombo
Devdutt Padikkal produced a remarkable innings of 117 to rescue India from a series of setbacks, guiding the visitors to 300 for five at stumps on the opening day of the second and final Test against Sri Lanka at the SSC ground in Colombo.
Playing in only his fourth Test match, the Karnataka batter displayed immense composure on a surface that offered bounce and movement to the Sri Lankan bowlers. Padikkal's 168-ball knock was a battle of patience, especially after he was dropped on zero and one. He eventually fell to Keshara Nuwantha late in the day, but his efforts ensured India remained in a strong position on a pitch expected to flatten out further.
Padikkal Anchors India After Early Reprieves
Unlike his previous Test century on a more forgiving surface in Galle, Padikkal faced a disciplined Sri Lankan attack on a pitch with notable bounce and bite. The left-hander brought up his half-century off 90 balls with a boundary off Prabath Jayasuriya. He survived an early scare when Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva dropped a catch at backward point off Nuwantha's bowling when Padikkal was on just one run.
Padikkal reached his century by driving Jayasuriya for a boundary to reach 99, followed by a single to long-on. His innings finally ended when Nuwantha bowled him with a delivery that penetrated his defense. By then, Padikkal had successfully rebuilt the innings alongside the middle order, hitting crucial boundaries through cuts and late cuts.
Top-Order Partnerships and Jaiswal-Fernando Confrontation
Earlier in the day, India's openers laid a solid foundation. Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill combined for a 120-run partnership for the third wicket. Jaiswal looked assured, hitting Lahiru Kumara for consecutive boundaries and executing a cover drive against Jayasuriya. However, he was dismissed for 45 by Asitha Fernando, who bowled a sharp nip-backer.
Following his dismissal, a heated confrontation took place between Jaiswal and Fernando. The pacer gave Jaiswal a send-off, prompting the Indian opener to turn back. The exchange escalated as the two came face-to-face, with Jaiswal's helmet making contact with Fernando's forehead before a push occurred. Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva and other players intervened to separate them. Former India all-rounder Ajay Jadeja criticized Jaiswal's actions, warning that physical contact crosses a dangerous line.
Gill also reached his half-century, executing a short-arm pull off Jayasuriya for four, before edging Fernando to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella for 50. Their quick departures forced India to rebuild once again.
Injuries and Late Wickets Challenge India
The afternoon and evening sessions presented physical challenges for the Indian batters in the intense Colombo heat. Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt after scoring just three runs, having copped a painful blow to his left wrist from a short delivery by Lahiru Kumara.
Ravindra Jadeja also suffered a stinging blow to his left forearm from Kumara, which caused visible swelling and subsequent cramping. Despite the injury, Jadeja battled on to share a crucial partnership of over 70 runs with Padikkal. Jadeja's resistance ended just short of his half-century when Fernando bowled him with a delivery that clipped the top of off-stump, leaving India at 296 for five.
Following Jadeja's dismissal, debutant Saransh Jain walked out to bat at number seven. Jain got off the mark in Test cricket by cutting a wide delivery from Fernando through the gully region for a boundary, bringing up India's 300-run mark.
State of Play Ahead of Day Two
At stumps on Day 1, Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on seven runs, while Saransh Jain was on four. Sri Lanka took the second new ball late in the day, with Fernando spearheading the attack. Fernando finished the day as the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, having dismissed Jaiswal, Gill, and Jadeja.
With the pitch expected to ease further before wearing down, India will look to push their score well past 400 on the second day. Sri Lanka will seek early breakthroughs with the relatively new ball. Day 2 is scheduled to commence on Monday, 24th August, at 4:30 am GMT (10:00 am IST).
