BWF World Championships: Hariharan and Arjun Advance as Tournament Returns to India
The 30th edition of the BWF World Championships commenced on Monday at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, marking the return of badminton's premier individual tournament to India after a 17-year gap. Running from August 17 to 23, the seven-day championship opened with first-round action across singles and doubles categories.
For the home crowd, the opening day brought early success in the men's doubles category. The Indian pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and M.R. Arjun advanced to the next round after their Irish opponents, Scott Guildea and Paul Reynolds, retired from the match. The Indian duo had established firm control early in the contest, leading 16-9 in the opening game before the retirement.
Day One Results Across Categories
Several key international fixtures were decided during the opening sessions of the tournament. In the men's singles draw, Japan's Kento Tanaka secured a straight-games victory over China's Weng Hongyang, winning 21-17, 21-14 to book his place in the second round. France's Toma Junior Popov also progressed after defeating Dominik Kwinta 21-19, 21-13.
In the women's singles category, Polina Mikhailova edged out Yana Hamza 2-1 in a closely contested opening-round match. Meanwhile, South Korea's Kim Ga-eun registered a dominant 21-7, 21-5 victory over Nour Ahmed Youssry, and Indonesia's Putri Kusuma Wardani advanced comfortably by defeating Mika De Guzman 21-12, 21-6.
In doubles action, the Malaysian women's pair of Ong Xin Yi and Ting Ching defeated Bukhrova Polina and Kantemyr Yelyzaveta 21-17, 21-12. In the men's doubles, Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap beat Nguyen Dinh Hoang and Tran Dinh Hoang 21-9, 21-13, while Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle defeated Chaloemphon Charoenkitamorn and Worrapol Thongsa-Nga 21-10, 21-19.
Indian Contenders Prepare for Major Challenges
The home nation's campaign features several high-profile players aiming to maintain India's record of winning at least one medal at every edition of the World Championships since 2011. Former world champion PV Sindhu, seeded ninth, begins her campaign against Ireland's Sophia Noble. Sindhu, who recently won the Japan Open Super 750, is seeking a historic sixth World Championships medal, which would make her the first player in the tournament's history to achieve the feat.
In the men's singles, 21-year-old Ayush Shetty faces a formidable challenge against top seed and defending champion Shi Yu Qi of China. Shetty has lost all three of his previous encounters against Shi but has previously pushed the Chinese star in close contests. Additionally, 2021 bronze medallist Lakshya Sen is scheduled to compete, alongside the top-ranked doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.
Other Indian matches scheduled for the opening day include Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand facing Spain's Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez in the women's doubles, while Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi are set to play Spain's Nikol Carulla and Carmen Maria Jimenez.
