ShaadiDotCom founder and Shark Tank India investor Anupam Mittal has publicly criticised the administrative burden placed on startups due to recurring Know Your Customer (KYC) documentation requirements. In a post shared on social media, Mittal expressed frustration over the time and resources spent on compiling and submitting KYC information to the Income Tax Department of India, arguing that such tasks divert focus away from core business operations.

Mittal noted that while India promotes itself as a startup nation, policy execution and administrative processes need to keep pace. He pointed out that startup teams annually spend a significant amount of time collecting KYC data from investors and coordinating across multiple angel investors to submit paperwork to tax authorities. Mittal questioned the necessity of the process, highlighting that the Income Tax Department already possesses the Permanent Account Numbers (PANs) of the involved parties.

Direct Appeal to Authorities and Public Response

In his social media post, Mittal tagged the official handle of the Income Tax Department, asking why businesses face such operational hurdles. He also directed his appeal to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, describing the administrative burden as an unnecessary waste of time that produces counterproductive outcomes for entrepreneurs. Additionally, Mittal tagged the Prime Minister's Office to highlight his concerns regarding regulatory policies affecting the startup ecosystem.

The post drawn supportive comments from several online users and business representatives who echoed similar concerns. Many commenters stated that mandatory KYC updates and Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) requirements create additional operational burdens for growing enterprises. However, some social media users expressed skepticism over whether public posts would prompt policy adjustments from the central government, arguing that smaller entrepreneurs often struggle to get their regulatory concerns addressed.

Broader Debates on Startup Taxation

Mittal is not the only high-profile entrepreneur to speak out on taxation and regulatory frameworks in India. Former Shark Tank India panelist Ashneer Grover has previously raised concerns regarding tax policies and operational challenges impacting startups, small businesses, and retail consumers. Grover has previously commented on taxation structures in sectors such as real-money gaming, citing high Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates and TDS applications as factors severely affecting business viability.

The discussion surrounding Mittal's statement underscores ongoing debates within the Indian business community regarding the balance between regulatory oversight and operational ease for early-stage companies.
