AICF Reschedules Senior National Chess Championship to 2026 Following Concerns Raised by GM Abhijeet Gupta
The All India Chess Federation (AICF) has officially announced rescheduled dates for the senior National Chess Championship, ensuring the tournament takes place within the 2026 calendar year instead of being deferred to 2027. The event is now scheduled to be held from November 29 to December 9, 2026, in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
The decision to adjust the schedule follows public concerns raised on social media by Arjuna Awardee and five-time Commonwealth champion Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta. Gupta had objected to the federation's initial plan, which would have deferred the 2026 edition of the national tournament to March 2027.
Rescheduling and Venue Confirmation
Following the concerns raised by Gupta, the top management at the AICF initiated discussions to address the scheduling issue. The federation held immediate meetings with key stakeholders and developed two alternative timeframes within the second half of 2026.
AICF officials consulted with the host state association to determine if the revised plans could be accommodated in Varanasi, which had been selected as the host city. Following these discussions, all involved parties agreed to retain Varanasi as the venue and host the tournament during the late November to early December window.
Concerns Raised by Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta
The tournament was previously scheduled to take place from March 25 to April 4, 2027. Gupta voiced his opposition to this timeline on X, formerly known as Twitter, pointing out that shifting the event to early 2027 would result in the complete omission of a national championship edition for the year 2026.
Additionally, Gupta noted that holding the national championship in March would create a direct conflict with school board exams. He argued that this timing would force young chess players across India to choose between their academic responsibilities and competing for the national title.
In his social media post, Gupta wrote: "India is producing world champions, but are we making it harder for the next generation to even compete?" He urged the national federation to reconsider its scheduling in the interest of younger players.
Calendar Constraints and Previous Edition
Prior to the rescheduling, a senior AICF official had explained that the initial shift to March 2027 was necessitated by a highly congested domestic and international chess calendar.
The official had indicated that the federation chose to prioritize age-group National Championships earlier in the year. This decision was intended to help young players qualify for World Championships without facing age-eligibility conflicts. Because the senior National Chess Championship does not have age-related qualification deadlines, it was initially positioned later in the scheduling cycle.
With the scheduling conflict now resolved, the tournament will proceed in Varanasi. The event follows the previous edition held in Guntur in October 2025, where Panneerselvam Iniyan won his maiden national title after defeating Goutham Krishna on a tiebreak.
